My school days were full of painful and embarrassing memories. My difficult behaviour, my poor school-work and my apparent laziness were blamed on my upbringing and family. I was constantly being assessed and found in need of extra help.
My mother engaged tutors to help me with reading, spelling and mathematics. All this effort produced some improvement, but at great cost to my self-esteem. My mother had to endure unjust criticism of her efforts, and cynicism about their likely results.About ten years ago, I changed jobs. It was the start of a journey of understanding about myself. I could no longer make excuses for my behaviour.
At the same time, my son, who was in Year Three and experiencing the same kind of learning and behavioural difficulties that I had experienced at his age, was diagnosed with ADHD, and started on medication.
To educate myself about my son's condition, I read books about ADHD.
In the process of getting help for his son, a father learns a surprising fact.
I soon realized that I was reading about myself!I sought the advice of a specialist in the field of adult ADHD. He took a lengthy history of my difficulties, and sought my wife's perspective.
ADHD was diagnosed, and medication was prescribed. The benefits were almost immediate. I could now remain focused, complete tasks quickly and be less socially and verbally impulsive. All aspects of my life showed improvement, and for the first time, I felt happy about my life.
It gave me an enormous sense of relief to finally have an explanation for the difficulties I had experienced. But it also left me saddened for the life that I could have had, if only I had been diagnosed as a child.
